The Intelligence Factor

Bright children are far more aware of their learning challenges and can experience a profound feeling of lack of confidence because of them.  These feelings often lead to the child turning inwards or acting out.  Bright children who struggle rarely recognize their strengths, they do , however, tend to focus on their inabilities.

My child is bright, why is school such a struggle?

It is common for people to equate intelligence with learning ability. They believe that because a child has difficulty with reading and or learning, they are not bright.  This is simply not true.  Many struggling learners are above-average intelligence.  The reason they struggle often can be directly related to one or more underdeveloped core learning skills called Cognitive Skills.

There are four broad categories of cognitive skills: Memory, Attention, Processing and Sequencing.  In order for learning to be effortless, these skills must be strong.  If any of these core skills are weak, learning will be difficult, and for the student who is above-average intelligence, the results can be devastating.

A Skills Assessment will identify why your bright child is struggling.

Helping a bright child with weak cognitive skills overcome their learning challenges can be achieved with exercises specifically designed to strengthen those skills that are weak.  It is a relatively easy and fast process for the child who is above-average in intelligence.  In fact, the brighter the child, the faster the process.

A bright child with weak cognitive skills will most likely experience further frustration with tutoring or other learning assistance. If you think of a bright child as being like a fancy race car with a flat tire, tutoring is like putting high-test gas in the car and expecting the flat tire to be fixed.  If the car is going to operate optimally, the tire must be fixed.  If a child has weak cognitive skills, they must be strengthened before learning can be effortless.
